Comparing the Volkswagen Golf R and Golf GTI Models

May 3rd, 2022 by

The newest Volkswagen Golf provides the fun-to-drive, fashionable design that drivers expect, putting it on par with the rest of VW’s 2022 lineup. While both models are versatile hatchbacks, there are some notable differences between the Golf R and Golf GTI.

The Golf R has a slightly elongated design, not only adding cargo space but power too. Despite its slightly shorter body, the Golf GTI still offers comfy seating for up to five. Read on to learn more about differences in price and performance!

2022 Golf GTI Trim Levels and Features

The 2022 Golf GTI, an updated eighth generation model, is available in three trim levels. Choose from the following trims, each offering 19.9 cubic feet of cargo capacity:

2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI S: $29,545

This base model comes standard with top driver assist features, like blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control and more!

2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI SE: $34,295

In addition to the safety features listed above, this mid-level trim boasts LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof, and a Harman Kardon premium audio system.

2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI Autobahn: $37,995

A top-of-the-line trim, the Autobahn adds luxury features like diamond-turned surface alloy wheels and leather upholstery.

2022 Golf R Features

Volkswagen Golf R: $44,640

The 2022 Golf R is available in only one trim level, but this fully-loaded model leaves nothing to be desired. Newly redesigned, it now comes standard with 4Motion® all-wheel drive and additional drive modes to maximize performance.

Check out Drift Mode during your test drive, along with the advanced infotainment system! The 2022 Golf R also offers 22.8 cubic feet of cargo space and achieves impressive fuel economy – 26 mpg combined! This falls just short of the Golf GTI which gets 28 mpg combined.

Compact Cars That Pack Major Performance

Both vehicles offer drivers the chance to choose between a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission and 6-speed manual transmission. However, the Golf R comes standard with all-wheel drive and a 2.0-liter turbocharged direct-injection EA888 evo4 TSI® engine, making it the sportier, speedier choice. Its 315-horsepower engine is reminiscent of its racing roots, reaching 60mph in only 4.3 seconds!

The Golf GTI is equipped with a front-wheel drive system and a 2.0-liter, inline-four cylinder, turbocharged/direct-injected engine. Producing 241 horsepower, it’ll get you from zero to 60 in just 5.1 seconds.
