Brief History of the Jetta GLI

The Jetta GLI made its grand debut in 1984, quickly earning rave reviews from drivers.

In the decades that followed, this must-drive model evolved with the times – always on trend, always in demand. Based on the Golf GTI, the GLI offered more cargo space and enhanced comfort features, essentially taking luxury to the next level. Available in a four-door option with roomy seating for five, the new GLI also provided a level of versatility and convenience that the GTI lacked.

Originally powered by a fuel-injected, 90-horsepower, 1.8-liter engine with a five-speed manual transmission, the Jetta GLI of the ‘90s swapped in a new 16-valve, 2.0-liter engine. By 2002, the Mk5 cruised onto the scene with a 2.0-liter TSI turbo engine that boosted horsepower to 200. The Mk6 was introduced in 2012, with styling updates that caused sales to soar.

Less than a decade later in 2020, the current generation took style to the streets, delighting drivers with a suite of new features. Fueled by a 228-horsepower, 2.0-liter engine, 2020 model years prioritized performance with a VAQ electronically controlled, torque-sensing, limited-slip differential that paired with an XDS® electronic differential lock. This set-up not only limited wheelspin, but enhanced drivers’ experience behind the wheel. Heated front seats, customizable ambient lighting, and the VW Digital Cockpit also joined the Jetta GLI’s long list of attributes.

In 2022, Volkswagen performed yet another refresh. While the turbo TSI engine remained beneath the hood, seventh-generation models featured new 18-inch alloy wheels, a unique honeycomb grille, red accents, and more. But the Jetta GLI’s evolution is not complete, with 2024 models predicted to further refine this already eye-catching model.

What to Expect

Volkswagen of America Inc. announced in July that the 40th Anniversary Edition of the ever-popular Jetta GLI was officially in production. Available exclusively in North America, this model will be limited to just 1,984 units – in honor of the GLI’s 1984 debut year, of course!

The base price for the 2024 Volkswagen Jetta GLI 40th Anniversary Edition is set at $28,085 (for manual transmission) and $28,885 (for DSG transmission), with an additional $1,150 for destination fees. And as demand grows and anticipation builds, we’re pleased to announce that the newest Jetta GLI should arrive on lots before summer ends!

Exterior Design

To commemorate four decades of incredible performance, the 2024 Jetta GLI will feature the signature red trim – the perfect contrast to its sleek, blackout elements. Any of the three exterior color options (Pure Gray, Pure White, and Rising Blue) will pair with a modern 18-inch wheel design and updated front grille, ensuring your new ride matches your unique style!

Interior Design 

With each generation more thoughtfully designed than the last, the 2024 Jetta GLI will feature molecular cloth seats (each with unique embossment), trademark red accents, and more upscale interior elements! Plus, the 1984 debut year can be found throughout on the cupholders, seat tags, front door sills, and steering wheel.

Unmatched Performance

Now outfitted with beefier brakes and a sportier exhaust, the Limited Edition Jetta GLI stands in even starker contrast to the Jetta. Based on the Autobahn trim level, the 40th Anniversary Edition shares the Autobahn’s EA888 four-pot engine, generating 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Drivers can choose between a six-speed manual and seven-speed DSG® dual-clutch automatic transmission.
